City Council Elects New Council President and Council Vice-President

2009 City Council President William Foley, Jr. and Vice President Bruce Stebbins were sworn in at the City Hall ceremony on Monday. Speakers included Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, and state Rep. Angelo J. Puppolo Jr.

HNE Ranked Among Best Health Plans Nationally

New 2008 Pierce Quantum 105’ Heavy Duty Aerial Ladder Truck Unveiled

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Fire Commissioner Gary Cassanelli, Fire Department Officials, Staff and Students from Kensington Avenue School participated in the unveiling of the Springfield Fire Department’s newest piece of apparatus. The new fire truck will replace a 1982 Maxim Tiller Ladder #3 presently housed at the Oakland Street Fire Station. More about the new ladder truck

Main Street Improvements Begin in the South End

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has announced that the City of Springfield has begun executing plans for improvements to Main Street in the City’s South End Neighborhood. These efforts are part of the overall South End Revitalization Plan that calls for streetscape improvements along Main Street and other infrastructure improvements to the street grid in the Hollywood and Marble Street areas. Construction of this approximately $3.2M Main Street project is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2009. Learn more

Talmadge Schools Tops 3rd-Grade MCAS Scores

Congratulations to the staff and students of Arthur T. Talmadge Elementary School - together they achieved top scores on last spring's Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test in third-grade English, out of the 1,002 third grades in Massachusetts, and the second highest scores in third-grade math. City Launches Anti-Gang Education Efforts for Middle and Elementary Schools

Springfield Public Schools has teamed up with the Springfield Police Department to teach students valuable lessons about a topic not normally talked about in class – gangs. Launched this week at Kennedy Middle and Gerena Elementary schools, the Gang Resistance and Education Training (G.R.E.A.T) program is aimed at steering children away from gangs, crime, drugs and violence. Greater Springfield-UMass Amherst Partnership

Officials from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the City of Springfield have formalized a new Greater Springfield-University of Massachusetts Amherst Partnership designed to promote collaborations that will lead to the revitalization of Springfield’s economy. The partnership aims to position the city in the long term as a center for environmentally beneficial green industries, to boost the city’s arts and creative economy, and to expand relevant university teaching and outreach initiatives. Three Springfield Companies Win Fifth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award

The Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development’s recently announced that Solutia, Liberty Mutual and Court Square Data were the selected winners of the Massachusetts Fifth Annual Team Economic Impact Award for the Western Region. This is the only awards event of its kind in Massachusetts, honoring a select group of companies from across the Commonwealth who will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy. City Announces Fraud Hotline

Financial Accountability is a top priority for the City of Springfield. With this goal in mind, the Office of the City Auditor has created a fraud hotline that can be used to report information about fraud, waste or abuse of City resources.

If you have information regarding known or suspected misappropriation of municipal funds or resources, we encourage you to report what you know to the City’s Internal Audit Division. Learn more.

'Single Stream' Pilot Recycling Program

: Big blue bins will help streamline the recycling process.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield DPW have announced a pilot program scheduled to begin on Sept. 20th in part of the East Forest Park section of Springfield. This program is aimed at increasing the rate of recycling by providing residents with the convenience of single-stream recycling. Learn more about the East Forest Park Pilot Recycling Program.

Inspectional Services Report Released

The Matrix Consulting Group was retained by the Springfield Financial Control Board to conduct an Organizational Review of Inspectional Services.
