Bradley flights to Amsterdam begin

Western New England may soon be a new international travel hotspot.  On Sunday, July 1 Bradley International Airport offered its first trans-Atlantic service to Amsterdam, opening the gate between the Pioneer Valley and the world beyond.

“Nonstop international service is the start of the establishment of the region’s trans-Atlantic bridge not only to Amsterdam but to the world,” said Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Ralph J. Carpenter in a press release.  “It cements our connection to global business and tourism markets.” Read more

The new service, provided by Northwest Airlines and partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will run seven days a week directly from Bradley to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.  Schiphol is Europe’s fourth biggest airport and connects to 81 other cities throughout Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East.

It is hoped that the service will be a great economic tool of development, bringing new business and tourism to the region. Russell Denver, president of the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, took part in the inaugural flight to the Netherlands to help open communications between businesses in Amsterdam and Springfield.

“We really wanted to highlight the new flight and to promote Western Massachusetts to people in the Netherlands and beyond,” said Denver.  “One of the greatest benefits of this new service will be to bring people to the region.”

Denver and others anticipate that the direct flights between Bradley and Schiphol will encourage international businesses to establish a new base in the area and attract tourists to the region.  “I expect there to be additional hotel nights and restaurant business and more people going to places like the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Quadrangle,” Denver said. “We hope to see a lot more tours around Springfield.”

The trans-Atlantic air service is expected to draw attention to the region and gradually bring world travelers to the Pioneer Valley.  Who knows? In no time at all Springfield may become the newest getaway for European globetrotters.
