July 17, 2008 - Mayor Domenic J. Sarno today announced the launch of a CitiStat webpage on the city’s website. The page, available at www.springfieldcityhall.com/citistat/, will feature an updated CitiStat progress report at least every six months. A copy of the first report is attached.
The report details the CitiStat implementation process and early successes including, action items that have led to a reduction in the use of sick time in the Facilities, Libraries and Public Works departments, the development of policies related to greater data accuracy, and vastly improved inter-departmental communication.
Sarno said CitiStat has resulted in the completion of more than 350 action items and has more than 400 items scheduled for follow-up. “Never before has the City engaged in such a tightly woven web of interdepartmental communication and the advantages of this practical, yet novel approach are evidenced in its accomplishments to date,” said Sarno.
Control Board Executive Director Stephen P. Lisauskas emphasized that CitiStat has been used by the most forward-thinking communities across the country, and will enable Springfield to improve and better manage its operations. “By systematically analyzing and improving operations, CitiStat will save millions of dollars for the taxpayers, funding continued investment in infrastructure and, more importantly, in the people of Springfield," said Lisauskas.
Citistat Director Paul N. Foster said his department is pleased to make the report available to the general public. “Though it is in its infancy, CitiStat has established itself as a valuable tool to the overall streamlining, efficiency and accountability of city government,” he said. “It’s important for citizens to be able to track our success as we move forward.”
CitiStat has been identified as one of the most progressive tools available to government managers today. The program began in Springfield in September 2007. The system serves as a transparent accountability and management tool allowing city employees to collect, analyze and use data in unprecedented ways.
