Talmadge Elementary School - together they achieved top scores on last spring's Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test in third-grade English, out of the 1,002 third grades in Massachusetts, and the second highest scores in third-grade math. Read the Republican story City Launches Anti-Gang Education Efforts for Middle and Elementary SchoolsSpringfield Public Schools has teamed up with the Springfield Police Department to teach students valuable lessons about a topic not normally talked about in class – gangs. Launched this week at Kennedy Middle and Gerena Elementary schools, the Gang Resistance and Education Training (G.R.E.A.T) program is aimed at steering children away from gangs, crime, drugs and violence. More info Greater Springfield-UMass Amherst PartnershipOfficials from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the City of Springfield have formalized a new Greater Springfield-University of Massachusetts Amherst Partnership designed to promote collaborations that will lead to the revitalization of Springfield’s economy. The partnership aims to position the city in the long term as a center for environmentally beneficial green industries, to boost the city’s arts and creative economy, and to expand relevant university teaching and outreach initiatives. More Three Springfield Companies Win Fifth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact AwardThe Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development’s recently announced that Solutia, Liberty Mutual and Court Square Data were the selected winners of the Massachusetts Fifth Annual Team Economic Impact Award for the Western Region. This is the only awards event of its kind in Massachusetts, honoring a select group of companies from across the Commonwealth who will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy. Read more Puerto Rican Heritage MonthNovember 3, 2008: The City of Springfield helped kick off Puerto Rican Heritage Month with a ceremony on the steps of Springfield City Hall. Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno participated in the ceremony by presenting a Mayoral Proclamation to Puerto Rican Cultural Center Director, Juan Gerena, and helped raise the Puerto Rican Flag which will fly throughout this month in front of Springfield City Hall. The Flag raising was sponsored by the Board and Staff of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center. City Announces Fraud HotlineFinancial Accountability is a top priority for the City of Springfield. With this goal in mind, the Office of the City Auditor has created a fraud hotline that can be used to report information about fraud, waste or abuse of City resources. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield DPW have announced a pilot program scheduled to begin on Sept. 20th in part of the East Forest Park section of Springfield.
